Understanding Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
Evidence-Based
What is ART? Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a fast, effective form of therapy that helps people heal from difficult experiences. Backed by science, ART uses eye movements and guided imagery to change the way your brain stores painful memories — without needing to talk about every detail. Whether you’re coping with stress, trauma, anxiety, or grief, ART offers a path toward emotional healing and relief, often in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.
How ART Works in the Brain Our brains are wired to heal — but sometimes, after trauma or stress, memories get 'stuck' in a way that causes ongoing distress. These stuck memories can show up as flashbacks, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or even physical symptoms. ART uses eye movements similar to those your brain uses during REM sleep (the stage when we dream). This helps your brain reprocess difficult memories and store them in a way that no longer feels overwhelming or distressing.
A key part of ART is 'memory reconsolidation' — the emotional impact of a memory is changed, even though the facts remain. You might remember the event, but the fear, shame, or sadness connected to it is greatly reduced — or even gone.
ART for Adults What ART Can Help With Trauma and PTSD Grief and Loss Anxiety and Panic Phobias and OCD Performance Anxiety What to Expect in a Session ART sessions are typically shorter and often bring results quickly — sometimes within just 1 to 5 sessions. Your therapist guides you through gentle eye movements and visualization exercises in a calm, supportive process that doesn’t require discussing trauma in detail.
